The Buchenbergs and Pagels of Jefferson County, Missouri


Carl Herklotz was born about 1820 in Germany to parents who were both born in Germany. His wife’s name was Christiana, and she was also born about 1820 in Germany to parents who were both born in Germany. In the 1880 census, Carl appears as a farmer in Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa.

Carl and Christiana Herklotz had a daughter named Clara Alvina Herklotz. Clara was born 28 Apr 1850 at Loschwitz, Saxony, Germany. In 1862 she emigrated from Germany and came to America. By 1874, Clara had married Albert Pagel.

Albert Pagel was born in Prussia in Germany. Albert was born 7 Nov 1840 according to his death certificate, although the 1900 census says Oct 1840. Both his parents were also born in Prussia.

In 1866, Albert Pagel came from Germany to America. He is listed as a farmer in the 1880 census, residing in Auburn Township, Fayette County, Iowa. In the 1900 census, however, he is listed as a farmer in Valle Township, Jefferson County, Missouri.

Albert Pagel died on 26 Oct 1916 of an injury from a fall in Valle Township, Jefferson County, Missouri. He was buried 1 Nov 1916 in City Cemetery in De Soto, Jefferson County, Missouri. The undertaker was Coxwell in De Soto.

His wife Clara appears as a widow and a farmer in the 1920 census, living in Valley Township in Jefferson County, Missouri. Living with her was a 13-year-old orphan named Gilbert Berns(?).

Clara Pagel died 23 Feb 1923 in Valle Township and was buried in City Cemetery on the 24th.

Albert and Clara (Herklotz) Pagel had at least the following children: (1) Johanna Amelia M. Pagel, and (2) Ferdinand C. Pagel.

Johanna Amelia M. Pagel was born 9 Sep 1874 at Eldorado, Fayette Co., Iowa. She is called Johanna Emilia in records of Mothershead Funeral Home in De Soto, Jefferson County, Missouri.

Johanna Pagel married Leo Buchenberg. He was born 15 May 1867 in Bavaria, Germany. Both his parents were also born in Bavaria. He came from Germany to America in 1891. He is listed as a farmer in Valle Township, Jefferson County, Missouri in the censuses of 1900 and 1920.

Leo Buchenberg died 30 Jul 1935 and was buried by Mothershead Funeral Home of De Soto in City Cemetery in De Soto, Jefferson County, Missouri. Johanna (Pagel) Buchenberg, his wife, died of endocarditis and carditis 14 Jul 1951 in Valle Township. She was buried in City Cemetery on the 17th.

Leo and Johanna Buchenberg had the following children: (1) Clara Philippine Buchenberg and (2) Albert H. Buchenberg. Clara was born 13 Nov 1898 in Valle Township. She never married, and died of epilepsy at age 21 on 20 Dec 1919 in Valle Township. She was buried on the 22nd in De Soto by Coxwell in City Cemetery.

Albert H. Buchenberg was born 27 Oct 1903 in Missouri, presumably Valle Township. He married Alice Melba Brod, daughter of Alexander and Katherine (“Kate”) Marie (Ebert) Brod. Alice was born 24 Oct 1898 in Missouri.

I always knew everyone in the area who knew Alice Buchenberg to refer to her as “Aunt Alice.” She died of respiratory arrest 1 Mar 1982 in Jefferson County, Missouri, according to records of Dietrich Funeral Home in De Soto. She was buried in Masonic Cemetery near Blackwell, St. Francois County, Missouri.

Albert Buchenberg died 17 May 1987 in Valle Township according to records of Dietrich Funeral Home. He was buried in Masonic Cemetery.

To return to the children of Albert and Clara (Herklotz) Pagel, they were also the parents of Ferdinand C. Pagel. Ferdinand was born in Fayette County, Iowa.

He was born 21 Mar 1877 according to his death certificate, Mar 1877 according to 1900 census, and 21 Mar 1879 according to a transcription of the records of Motherhead Funeral Home in De Soto. That same record says, however, that he lived to be 56 yrs., 4 mos., 7 days old, which would mean he was born in 1877, not 1879.

Before 1920 he married Julia Anna Loehr. She was born 28 Nov 1883 in Alabama and was known as Julia, Julie, and Julianna. She was a daughter of August Ermantrautt-Loehr, who was born in Germany, and his wife, Pauline (Meier), born in West Prussia.

Ferdinand C. Pagel appears in the 1920 census in Valle Township, Jefferson County, Missouri, as a farmer. He died 29 Jul 1933 in Valle Township and was buried on the 31st in City Cemetery in De Soto. The cause of death was mitral regurgitation of the heart.

Julia died 6 Nov 1969. She was buried by Mothershead Funeral Home of De Soto in City Cemetery in De Soto.
