William Wayne Settle of Madison Co., MO

Rev. William Wayne Settle was born 9 Apr 1809 at Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co., TN.  On 10 Jul 1832 in Bollinger Co., MO, he married Sarah Barrett, daughter of George S. and Patsy (Neavill) Barrett.  On 21 Jun1857 in MO he married Clarissa Pugh, daughter of Samuel and Sophia Pugh.

He became a pioneer Baptist minister of Southeast Missouri and was a member of the St. Francois Association of United Baptists.  William W. Settle came to Missouri in 1833, moving there with George Barrett, who became his father-in-law.  In 1834 he settled in Madison County, and it was there that he became born again and “professed religion.” 

He was ordained by the Big Creek Baptist Church in Madison County around 1839.  He eventually moved to Twelve Mile Township, where he preached on Sundays and farmed during the week.

He died 15 Oct 1870 in Madison Co., MO and is buried in Settle Cemetery.
